Paper exams look cheap until you add everything up. Exam papers, answer sheets, invigilators, and hours of manual marking build up every time an exam runs. This article works out the difference with numbers you can check yourself.

The cost parts of a paper exam

A paper exam has per-candidate costs that repeat each session: printing the question paper, the answer sheet, and distribution. On top of that, there is staff time for manual marking and compiling results, which can take an evaluator many hours.

The math for 5,000 candidates

The calculator on the Gogotes pricing page uses these assumptions. You can change them to match your institution:

  • Paper exam: about Rp5,000 per candidate, including printing and paper.
  • Digital exam on Gogotes: $0.20 per candidate. One credit is used when a candidate starts an exam session, and absent candidates use none.

For 5,000 candidates, a paper exam costs about Rp25,000,000. A digital exam costs about $1,000.00. The difference is roughly Rp15,000,000 for one exam round.

No subscription

Signing up and preparing your question bank, packages, and candidates on Gogotes costs nothing. There is no monthly subscription. Credits are only used when candidates actually sit an exam, so a month without exams is a month without cost.

Automatic marking, essay marking, and result exports use no extra credits.

Things to check

These figures are estimates. Printing costs differ between schools and training centers, and this comparison does not include internet access or candidate devices. Before you compare, work out the printing and marking cost from your most recent paper exam.
